SummeR, Research, PoSTBAC & Linkage Opportunities for Underrepresented Applicants

 

Med-Mar. The AAMC hosts the Medical Minority Applicant Registry (Med-MAR) for students that self-identify as traditionally underrepresented in the field of medicine or are economically disadvantaged. Please refer to the AAMC website for more specifics on this program and how to sign up.

Summer Opportunities

  • University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) - this 9 week program assists underrepresented applicants with gaining admission to dental school. This program includes DAT preparation and application assistance. Deadline: February 15, 2022

  • Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free, summer enrichment program for students who have completed their freshman or sophomore year. The program takes place on 12 campuses across the nation to increase resources and access to information on the health professions to students who are traditionally underrepresented in medicine. Application opens in November and the deadline is February 5, 2022. Open to current freshman and sophomores with a 2.5 GPA.

  • Established in 1974, Medical Education Development (MED) Program at UNC School of Medicine offers a 9 week summer program, with a $3,000 stipend and a letter of rec/evaluation upon completion of the program. Deadline: Jan. 7, 2022.

  • Premedical Urban Leaders Summer Enrichment (PULSE), sponsored by Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, hosts a 6 week academic summer program.

  • The Rubens J. Pamies, MD, Opportunity Fund Scholarship Application: $500 pays for test prep, application fees, travel to interviews or conferences. Must be alumnus of the SHPEP, SMDEP, SMEP, or MMEP. (Deadline +/- early April)

  • In cooperation with the AAMC and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the Summer Health Professional Education Program (SHEP) is a free summer program providing a variety of academic and research opportunities for underrepresented premed students. 

  • Summer Academic Enrichment Program (SAEP), 6 week academic summer program at Virginia Commonwealth University. (Virtual program in 2021)

  • SUMP/Bronx Health Opportunity at Einstein (HOPE) Virtual Summer 2021 program is a 4 week summer mentorship program at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. SUMP is being replaced by the Bronx Health Opportunity for the summer of 2021. The Summer Undergraduate Mentorship Program (SUMP) of the Hispanic Center of Excellence (HCOE) at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Einstein) normally sponsors a 6 week summer program for underrepresented groups in medicine and/or students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Students are paired with local physicians to shadow.

  • Tour for Diversity in Medicine sponsors workshops, speakers and mentorship with minority physicians. They normally tour around on a bus to different communities, but in the summer of 2021, it was virtual. Summer 2022, is yet to be determined.

  • Chicago Cancer Health Equity Collaborative (ChicagoCHEC) is a National Cancer Institute led by the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University, Northeastern Illinois University and the University of Illinois at Chicago. “The ChicagoCHEC Fellows program is a comprehensive learning experience for undergraduate and postbaccalaureate students at Northeastern Illinois University, University of Illinois at Chicago, Northwestern University, the City Colleges of Chicago, and other Community/ Junior Colleges in the Chicago metropolitan area who are planning to apply to graduate or medical school. This program is focused on the development of academic, technical, and professional skills in preparation for careers in social, behavioral, and biomedical research and in healthcare. ChicagoCHEC Fellows will spend the summer in seminars and research rotations learning from leading researchers. Following the summer intensive program, ChicagoCHEC Fellows will have the option to be matched with a research mentor and research project (depending on mentor and project availability) during the academic year.” Deadline: February 28, 2022

  • Weill Cornell Medicine sponsors the Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program, a summer research program for underrepresented applicants to medical school who are interested in working in underserved communities. Deadline: February 1, 2022.

Medical School Linkages and Early Admission Opportunities

  • Midwestern University Bridges Program: Midwestern University (both in IL and AZ) has an opportunity for students interested in osteopathic medicine. “Program eligibility requirements can apply for admission to the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine (AZCOM) through AACOMAS for provisional early acceptance by July 1 of the year preceding completion of their Biomedical Science Program. To be eligible, a minimum overall and science GPA of 2.75 in the undergraduate program and an MCAT score of 490 or higher is required.”

  • UNC School of Medicine offers a year long program called MED EXCEL (Medical Education Development Early eXperience in Clinical Education and Learning). After successful completion of the program, students are given a conditional acceptance to the school of medicine.   • Wy’east Post Baccalaureate Pathway is a 10 month program intended to support American Indians and Alaska Native students who want to be doctors. Applicants need to have either unsuccessfully applied to medical school or not achieved a competitive MCAT score. The Wy’east Post Baccalaureate Pathway is a partnership with UCDavis School of Medicine, University of Washington School of Medicine, Oregon Health & Science University and the Native American Health Sciences Center at Washington State University.  This 10 month program takes place at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) in Portland, Oregon.
